The cobra (COBRA spelling) of COpenhagen, BRussels and Amsterdam or experimental artists International (PSI) is an artistic movement validated in Paris in 1948 by poets Christian Dotremont and Joseph Noiret and by painters Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille and Asger Jorn in reaction to the quarrel between abstraction and figuration. This movement publishes the journal Cobra (1948-1951). He partially dislocated in 1949 after the international exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and definitely on declaration 19511. This does not mean the end of the production of works in the extension of the Cobra to be much richer contrary and freer after Cobra for most artists that this movement has energized.
“Artists will seek their models with artistic forms not yet contaminated by the norms and conventions of the West totems and magical signs of primitive cultures, oriental calligraphy, prehistoric and medieval art. However they discover intact sections even of their own culture, including such forms, still vigorous, the Nordic folk art, primitive art, naive art, and creations due to children or mentally handicapped. “
