Description
A rural Genji is an original artwork realized in 1829-1842 by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Illustrated book in two volumes. Book title “Nise Murasaki Inaka Jenji”, 9th instalment. Text by Ryutei Tanehiko (1783-1842), pictures by Kunisada. Front cover colored with female figures, the lady on the right with the facial features of an okame, inside b7w illustrations, episodes of the Genji love story in winter, various figures. Tanehiko became famous through this book, which was a bestseller of the gokan. Gokan are popular novels in which pictures are integrated in the text. Signed: Kunisada ga. Good impression with blindstamping on the cover (wave pattern in the background), slightly rubbed, faded and soiled and yellowed, rubbed, single hand-coloured. Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (1786 – 1865) was one of the most famous designers of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints from Japan in the 19th century. Burn Sumita Syogoro, at the age of 15-16 years became a part of the Utagawa Toyokuni’s family and in 1844 he took the male of the master Toyokuni.
