A brilliantly executed and characterful surrealist still life composition, executed in tempera on board in 1965 by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden. Small yet impactful in its composition, the painting presents a carefully arranged tabletop composition featuring a glass vase adorned with delicate white floral patterns, a collection of green pearssome resting on a blue dish and others scattered on the wooden surfaceand a gracefully curved branch with a golden autumn leaf. The background includes an arched doorway leading to a softly lit room, with a checkered floor adding a geometric contrast to the organic shapes of the fruit and vase. Inviting viewers to revel in the simple beauty of everyday objects, the artist masterfully captures the essence of surrealism and realism through his meticulous brushwork and keen attention to detail, as well as by simplifying the objects into bold, flat shapes. The colour palette is rich, and the artist has skilfully used subtle gradations of tone to suggest volume, particularly in the glass vase and pears. The brushstrokes are precise, smooth and clean emphasising the flatness of the shapes and contributing to the tempera mediums characteristic of flatness and opacity. This technique lends the painting a polished, clean aesthetic. This tempera on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen border.
