Son of the painter Heinrich Hartmann, initially studied at the Stuttgart Academy, from 1889 in Munich, studied at the Munich Academy from 1890 to 1892 under Otto Seitz, here master student under Nikolaus Gysis, Paul Hcker and Andreas Mller, worked in Munich until 1900, 1900 – 09 in Worpswede and Osterholz-Scharmbeck, here temporarily head of a private painting school, then in Wertheim am Main 1914 in Wiesbaden, member of the German Artists’ Association Weimar and the Munich Artists’ Cooperative, supplied the Munich Glass Palace from 1898 to 1914
