Description
Aussi Jaffary Rashid, b. 1960, d. 2008, associate of R. Chiway, Tingatinga School, Tanzania, “Tingatinga” is the Tanzanian term for this art form, mostly known in Tanzania, Kenya, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Tingatinga art can be described as painting on a board using bicycle paint. Market restrictions prevented the artists from working in larger formats, as most buyers were foreigners who wanted to take art out of Tanzania by plane. From this perspective, Tingatinga is a true form of “airport art” – cultural art from developing countries that was adapted to the specific requirements of travelers, including the format of the artwork. Also, the selection of motifs in Tingatinga art was often tailored to the expectations of the buyer. At the heart of Tingatinga’s art is an East African design in which decorative vines and patterns of Swahili culture cover almost every space of the painting. Paintings by A. Rashid’s or R. Chiway’s paintings can be found in hundreds of museums around the world, including in England, Scandinavia, Germany, France and the USA, and are sold by renowned auction houses in Europe, Australia and the United States.
