Description
A gorgeous, extremely rare and very characterful museum-worthy early 19th Century Comb Back Windsor armchair in lovely condition. Made around 1840 in Lincolnshire in England, this wonderful armchair won’t fail to impress with its charming artisan quality and will enhance any interior with its wonderful colouring and aged antique aesthetic.
Most likely made by either Camm of Grantham or Marsh of Sleaford, this is unstamped as some of theirs were, but is undoubtedly a Lincolnshire Comb Back Windsor chair by a master-craftsman, as shown by its distinctive curved birch wood crest rail and outwardly-turned spindles, which are only found on Lincolnshire Comb Backs. Made predominantly of solid ash, it has a sculpted saddle seat of ash, which was much more prominently used for the seats in early Lincolnshire Windsors, unlike their Thames Valley counterparts, which tended to use elm.
Beautifully crafted and extremely comfortable, it displays wonderful quality and detail throughout. It features seven long central spindles to the back with six shorter outer ones below the arms and beautifully turned arm and back supports. It has the characteristic Lincolnshire curved birch wood crest rail atop the back, complete with lower incised line detailing, wonderfully aged single-piece bent wrap-around bow arms and lovely turned tapering legs supported by an attractive H-stretcher.
CONDITION
This is in good antique condition. Beautifully crafted and built to last of quality solid wood, it is structurally sound and shows lovely aged colouring. The only minor flaws are an historic, hard-to-notice restoration to a split in the side of the seat and some historic woodworm holes to the side and underside of the seat, for which the whole chair has been treated for good measure. Overall it’s an exceptional chair in really lovely condition and if well looked after it should be just as gorgeous and even more remarkable in another 180+ years – please see the photos.
