Description
Figure Happy Buddha / Meitreya Buddha Enameled porcelain, 19th century. XX China
Wonderful figure of Smiling Buddha in Chinese enameled porcelain. This type of representation does not correspond to the historical Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), but to the so-called Budai, known as the “Smiling Buddha” or “Fat Buddha”. In Chinese tradition, it symbolizes
happiness, abundance and good fortune. Arms raised towards the sky are a gesture of joy, which is often interpreted as a symbol of celebration, good luck and prosperity. The Buddha’s expression, with a big smile, reflects his role as a figure of benevolence and joy. Furthermore, bare feet reinforces its association with simplicity and proximity to the town.
The bright turquoise glaze is a distinctive feature of Chinese glazed porcelains, known as monochrome glaze. This type of glaze was popular in Qing Dynasty ceramics. The vibrant tone of the enamel was obtained through copper oxides in the mixture, which react to high temperatures during firing, generating the characteristic blue-green color.
The porcelains of the Guangxu period (1875 – 1908), especially the monochrome glazed ones, were produced in large quantities in the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. However, with the opening of foreign trade, many pieces like this were destined for the European and American markets. Small restoration in one hand.
