Description
Reliquary statue, Kota Obamba ethnic group, Gabon. Thick wooden core veneered with leaves and decorated brass strips. Presumed circa 1960. Sold with metal base.
Kota reliquaries are used for ancestor worship, often placed on top of baskets containing the bones of the deceased, allowing society to venerate the dead.
Reliquary height only 59 cm.
